This is the first post for all the bike people out there. I’m gonna list all the gear I got for my bike and all the camping gear that Hillary and I got for the trip. Now, we’ve never done this kind of trip before so all of these items were chosen because of what we already knew about bikes, what we’d read about, and what other people had recommended. As we go, I’ll be sure to update you all on whether or not any of these items was useful, the right or wrong choice, crappy, or a godsend.
We had the official planning meeting earlier tonight and hammered out some details. We will be leaving Summit, NJ early in the morning of the 18th of July. Kiki’s father “Papa” will drive us to a small town in southern Virginia where we will begin. Within a couple of days we will reach the outer banks of North Carolina and within 8-9 days we should reach Wilmington, NC. From there we will continue down into South Carolina towards Charleston where we will hopefully stay with our friend Whit. More details later. I have to sleep.
This is the new bike I bought for the trip. Unloaded for now and completely awesome.

We’ve been spending the last two months getting ready for our first ever bicycle tour. The route we have chosen begins in northern North Carolina and will go through South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida ending at Key West. We’ll be driven to NC and we’ll fly back from Florida.
Because it’s our first tour, it’s getting pretty expensive to prepare for. We all bought new bikes for the trip and we all had to get sleeping bags, tents, camping gear of all kinds, panniers for our bikes (those are the “saddle bags”), bicycle shoes, shorts, socks, gloves, and tools, and rain protection. There are so many more little things to get as well. All of these things we’ll be able to use again on the next tour but it’s a lot to get all at once.
More prep info later…
