Noun Classes Agreement

Note that some of the changes mentioned above are also (in the singular) when the following word begins with a vowel: the and become it there, you and the l, my will be my (as if the name would be masculine) and it will be this. According to Carl Meinhof, Bantu`s languages have a total of 22 nominic classes called nominal classes (this term was introduced by W. H. J. Bleek). Although no language is known to express everyone, most of them have at least 10 Nov classes. For example, by numbering Meinhof, Shona has 20 classes, Swahili has 15, Sotho has 18 and Ganda has 17. Apart from verbs, the main examples are “this” and “that” that become “these” or “these” if the following noun is plural: However, not all bantu languages have these exceptions. In Ganda, each singular class has an appropriate plural class (except one class that has no singular-pluriural distinction; some plural classes also correspond to more than one singular class) and there are no exceptions, as is the case in Swahili.

This is why Ganda`s linguists use the orthogonal numbering system when discussing Ganda`s grammar (except in the context of the bantu`s comparative language), giving the 10 classes of traditional names of that language. The Atlantic-Congo language may have ten or more classes of nostun, defined according to non-sexual criteria. Some nominal classes are reserved for men. The Fula language has about 26 Noprov classes (exact number varies slightly depending on the dialect). According to Steven Pinker, the Kivunjo language has 16 non-one classes, including classes for precise positions and general area diagrams, classes for clusters or pairs of objects and classes for objects that come in pairs or clusters, and classes for abstract qualities. [3] If, in addition to names and pronouns, names and pronouns are expressed on other parts of the language, the language must have grammatical sex. There are about 80 inanimate names that are in the animated class, including names that identify celestial objects (moon, rainbow), metal objects (hammer, ring), edible plants (sweet potato, peas) and non-metallic objects (whistle, ball). Many exceptions have a round shape, and some can be explained by the role they play in zande mythology. Compared to English, Latin is an example of a very curved language. The consequences for the agreement are therefore: Here are some special cases for the verb agreement diefach in English: In addition, there are polyplural naming classes. A polyplural nomadic class is a plural class for more than one singular class.

[4] Proto-bantu class 10 includes, for example, the plural of class 9 and 11 names, while Class 6 includes pluralists from classes 5 and 15. Classes 6 and 10 are bequeathed by most of Bantu`s surviving languages as polyplural classes, but many languages have developed new polyplural classes, rarely used by other languages. Case agreement is not an essential feature of English (only personal pronouns and pronouns with a case mark).
